Clearly the people on this forum have a depth of knowledge of C++ as well as other programs. So you should be the guys to ask.

Of all the books/reading material available what would you recomend to a beginner who is interested in C++ language. Im looking for something that will start with baby steps then progress.

I have already looked up some C++ tutorials online and they were just too advanced. I prefer a book because the computer monitor makes my head hurt after a while.

Any help is appriciated.

I don't know if this book is still in print but C++ Programming in Easy Steps by Mike McGrath is a good first timers book and the cost was only $9.95 at Barnes and Noble a few years ago.

Sams teach yourself C++ in 21 days was a good beginner for me.

I was told and read on numerous forums to stay away from that book so I did. sad.gif

I liked it - real beginner stuff in there along with some advanced stuff and general principles. I liked the day-by-day approach, gave me something to stick to.

Picked up Wrox VC++ 2005 - not a big fan yet, but it's got a few good bits. Mostly managed stuff in there.

I am 100% against managed code but that is neither here nor there.

Anyways shower time and off to the guitar shop to get some allen wrenches.

I've been going through C++ Primer Fourth Edition.

One thing about learning from a book though, at least for me...it was necessary to take some pretty good notes to help burn in the information, and it makes for great reference later on too. Helps sift out all the junk wording too wink.gif.

Make a great effort to do the exercises, and maybe even write a couple of your own. If you take some time off, go back and try your hand at a couple of the exercises to be sure you still remember where you left off.

I use the Bloodshed Dev C++ IDE to compile code with (it's free and works great).

I've always been a fan of the deital & deital books.

Im using "sams teach yourself c++ in 24 hours" in conjunction with "C++ for dummies 4th edition"

its working out pretty good, im about 1/2 through both books, but if your only using one book, i would go with c++ for dummies- just my opinion.

To original poster ... why do you want to learn C++ ?

C++ is just a tool.
Like any other programming language.

Each tool has appropriate uses. And upsides. And downsides. And depending on flavour of the month, certain tools may dramatically grow the size of your e-peen. Why, in 1997, late fall, if you knew Java, you might even have gotten a date with a non-geek.

You learn to use a hammer better if you have a nail problem.

Reading a book about a hammer with pretty pictures of how to flex your arm correctly might teach you a little. But it won't teach you as well as having cat 5 hurricane blowing up your ass and a dozen 6x4 sheets of plywood that need nailing to your windows.

Unless, of course, you only have screws.

What's the problem you need to solve ? Use the right tool. Learn by doing, not by reading about doing. Unless, of course, you don't like doing, and want to become a teacher.
